"I had been taking German classes in school for almost 10 years when I studied abroad in Germany. The first morning I was there, I asked someone on the street for directions and realized how much I still had to learn about the language. When studying another language, there really is no substitute for being in a place where it’s spoken. I really valued the people who took the time to help me improve my language skills while I was there, teachers, friends, and strangers on the street. Now, I work to help international students at Tulane with their language and academic skills, because I know what it’s like to be on the other side of that situation. It’s fun and exciting to be living and studying in a new place, but it can be hard too. I want international students to feel like their experiences are heard, and I’m glad to work in a community that values those experiences."
