International Education Week 2024

International Education Week (NOV. 18 - 22, 2024)

For International Education Week 2024 (IEW), we are exploring the theme of Displaced Identities, Postcolonial Legacies, and Creating New Narratives. We want to use the week to reflect on Tulane and higher education’s role in global inequities and ask how we can disrupt those inequities and towards more just futures.

We join campuses nationwide through IEW, a joint national initiative of the Department of State and the Department of Education, to think more deeply about internationalization across U.S. Campuses. At Tulane, we are using IEW to cultivate spaces for global awareness across borders, fostering an inclusive international community, and facilitating impactful global learning and engagement while also aligning with our institutional mission of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Keynote Session

Date: Monday, November 18
Time: 6:00 PM
Location: TBD

María Magdalena Campos-Pons is a renowned Cuban multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the complex intersections of memory, spirituality, and identity, particularly as they relate to personal and collective histories in the Caribbean. Her artistic practice spans a wide range of mediums, including photography, performance, sculpture, drawing, painting, and video. Through richly layered, multimedia installations, she addresses themes of displacement, inequality, and the entanglement of personal and global narratives.

In addition to her own artistic work, Campos-Pons is a leader in advancing platforms for other artists. She founded the Engine for Art, Democracy & Justice, an organization that fosters collaboration between artists and institutions from the U.S. South and the global South, supporting work that resists and repairs legacies of inequality. She is also the creator of "Intermittent Rivers", a multi-artist initiative launched in Matanzas, Cuba, as part of the 2019 Havana Biennial.

Campos-Pons holds degrees from the National School of Art and the Higher Institute of Art in Havana, and completed her MFA at the Massachusetts College of Art. She has held prestigious positions such as the Bunting Fellowship at Harvard University and currently serves as the Cornelius Vanderbilt Endowed Chair and Professor of Fine Arts at Vanderbilt University. Her work has been featured at major international venues, including the Venice Biennale, Museum of Modern Art, National Portrait Gallery, and Brooklyn Museum, cementing her influence on contemporary art and her contributions to the global dialogue on identity and social justice.

The LAST 100 commemorates 100 years of Latin American Studies at Tulane, reflecting on its evolution since 1924. The centennial celebrates the hiring of faculty, development of interdisciplinary curricula, and establishment of a distinguished Latin American library and outreach programs. The legacy of The LAST 100 includes the digitization of resources documenting the contributions of Tulane’s Latin Americanists through research, publications, and leadership in the field. It highlights Tulane’s significant contributions in areas such as Mesoamerican archaeology, Latin American film, Brazilian music, and political science, as well as in public policy, environmental health, and tropical medicine. Alumni and staff stories, along with archival research, form the backbone of this historical narrative.
