Learn More About Health & Safety Country Conditions

The U.S. Department of State has country-specific advice about safety available online. The Department of State also shares information about host country restrictions related to COVID. Tulane Global also recommends that travelers review country-specific health guidance from the CDC.

International Health Insurance

Tulane's students, faculty and staff traveling abroad in connection with University-related activity must have health insurance for the duration of their stay outside the U.S. Start by contacting your U.S. health insurance company to understand any international benefits you might already have and inquire about additional options for international insurance packages. When traveling abroad, do not cancel your U.S. coverage!

Checklist of questions to consider regarding your international insurance
  1. What is the dollar limit of the amount of coverage provided for various services?
  2. Does the plan include:
    1. hospitalization?
    2. ambulance costs?
    3. emergency room expenses?
    4. visits to the doctor?
    5. prescriptions?
    6. medical evacuation?
    7. repatriation of remains?
    8. security assistance/evacuation?
    9. other non-medical benefits such as baggage loss or trip cancelation?
  3. Do I need to pay expenses up front and then submit receipts to the insurance company for reimbursement?
  4. What documentation of expenses is required? Does the bill need to be in English and the amount of the charges in U.S. dollars?
  5. Does the plan exclude any coverage that I need (e.g., adventure sports, pre-existing conditions, special medical needs)?
  6. Are there multilingual staff members available for translating if needed while I am abroad?

Tulane Global recommends in most circumstances purchasing GeoBlue Supplemental Medical Coverage. Purchasing GeoBlue insurance may be mandatory for students who participate in certain study abroad program run by Tulane, with coverage automatically purchased on the student’s behalf at the time of enrollment. Note that Tulane’s insurer restricts insurance coverage for particular countries. Contact the Tulane Global team to determine if your intended travel destination is on the foreign exclusion list.

All Tulanians have the option to directly purchase GeoBlue insurance, subject to a Tulane discount. Be sure to enter Tulane's group code, CME-484 (include the "-" for the code to function). You will be directed to Tulane's policy page and be able to register by entering your personal information. Premiums are quite affordable, costing roughly $20/week, $300 per semester and $500 per year.

Emergencies Abroad

All Tulane travelers should carry with them the emergency contact information for Crisis24, as well as any programmatic/sponsoring unit emergency contact information that the department might have in place.

When abroad, instances may arise where you need urgent travel assistance or emergency support. While they can be challenging, such situations are easier to handle when you know where to turn for help. Medical or security emergencies include:

  • Non-life threatening injury or sickness
  • Non-life threatening motor vehicle accidents
  • Mental health crises
  • Victim of criminal activity
  • Victim of sexual assault
  • Arrest and detention
  • Terrorist attacks
  • Natural disasters
  • Manmade or biological disasters

In the event of an emergency, take the following steps, as appropriate:

  1. Stabilize the immediate emergency/threat (e.g., rescue others from immediate threat; take cover; leave area safely; etc.).
  2. Alert first responders in-country of the threat, as appropriate. Not all countries have a central 911 emergency dispatch. However, they may have dedicated country-wide numbers for police, fire, and ambulance. Click here for a list of “911” equivalents by country.
  3. Contact the emergency operations center for Crisis24 - Phone: 1+ (312) 470-3115 / Email: goc@crisis24.com
  4. When safe, you or the trip leader should submit an incident report to Tulane documenting critical information.
  5. Contact your on-campus school or department.
  6. Respond to the crisis by gathering and verifying facts, coordinating support, and initiating appropriate hazard-specific protocols.

Be prepared to provide the following information to the insurance carrier, if possible:

  • Caller's phone number, relationship to the affected traveler
  • Traveler's name, age, and gender
  • Description of incident and traveler(s) condition(s)
  • Name, location, and phone number of hospital, if applicable
  • Name and contact information of treating physician, if applicable
  • Requested assistance or support
