OISS Operations During COVID-19


In-Person Office Hours and Services (below) are Suspended


Office Hours

Monday- Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

Downtown Office Hours

During the academic year, OISS holds weekly office hours in the Tidewater Building, Room 1225 for the convenience of our downtown students, staff and scholars.  No appointment is necessary.

    Front Desk Services 

    The following services and materials are available at the OISS front desk Monday through Friday, 8:30- 1:00 and 2:00- 5:00 without any appointment:


    • Requesting a travel signature, a new I-20 or DS-2019, a Social Security letter, or a full-time student letter. Will be returned within 3-5 business days.
    • Submitting completed applications for underenrollment and program extensions. Will be returned within 3-5 business days.


    Walk-In Hours Services

    Walk-In sessions will be available during the following times and each visitor has a maximum of 15 minutes. (Please see the services provided in Walk-In hours below.):


    COVID-19 Virtual Walk-In Hours

    To meet an OISS advisor during walk-ins, you will need use the correct Zoom link above.  You will enter a virtual waiting room to wait your turn to meet with the adviser. When the adviser is ready, they will admit you. You cannot sign up in advance for walk-in hours, but you can make appointments in advance for all OISS services by going here.

    Virtual Walk-in Hour Topics:

    • Questions related to travel signatures and travel questions (If you would like to request a travel signature and don't have questions, use this form and it will be processed.)
    • Questions about full-time student letters (If you would like to request a full-time student letter and don't have questions, use this form and it will be processed.)
    • Questions about Social Security letters (If you would like to request a Social Security letter and don't have questions, use this form and it will be processed.)
    • On-campus employment questions



    Non-Walk In Services (Appointment Services)

    The services and topics below require more time than walk-in hours allow. To meet about these topics, you must call 504-865-5208 or visit the OISS front desk to make an appointment. In general, appointments cannot be made for the same day that you call or visit unless it is an emergency.


    • Extension of your program of study
    • Off-campus employment: Curricular Practical Training (CPT) Optional Practical Training (OPT) Academic Training
    • Other off-campus work related questions 
    • Defense/graduation questions
    • Academic Concerns and under-enrollment
    • Any other personal issue for which you need help or support

    OPT Drop-Off Hours

    We will begin accepting OPT packets on Monday, February 17. 


    During OPT season there are specific times to submit your completed application for Optional Practical Training (OPT). 


    Mondays:          12:30- 1:30 PM          GWBC 300

    Wednesdays:     3:00- 4:00 PM            OISS, 6901 Willow Street 


    You may also drop-off your OPT Packet during our Downtown Office Hours on Tuesdays from 1:00 - 4:00 at Tidewater Bldg. Suite 1225.
