The Global Observer is a print and online publication committed to exploring global issues and trends. Written by Tulane student, alumni, faculty or staff authors of diverse backgrounds and perspectives, each print issue will explore a theme. Our goal is to collect a myriad of writing that will illustrate the similarities and differences of region, geography and citizenship.
The magazine's inaugural issue theme is Tourism.
What kind of topics or articles are we looking for? Here are some ideas:
When you were studying abroad, did you feel like a tourist at first? When did you notice you were less a tourist and more a citizen of your host city?
Has tourism affected - either negatively or positively - the economy, culture or development of your host city or country? What impacts of tourism did you witness? What did the locals say?
How did you do "tourism" when you were abroad?
How can you compare tourism in your host city (or some tourism experience you had while abroad) to the tourism industry in New Orleans?
If you have come to New Orleans from somewhere else, what do you think about how tourism and culture intersect here in the Big Easy?
These questions are just the tip of the iceberg! We are open to and interested in this topic from many different angles and perspectives.
We'll accept articles, first-person narratives, photo essays - even creative fiction and poetry!
Writing for the Global Observer is a great opportunity to reflect on your intercultural experiences, as well as to gain a publication credit! This exposure will be especially useful if you would consider travel writing in the future to earn money! OSA staff will work with you throughout the editorial process to produce a great piece of writing and will publish your work online and in a print anthology at the end of the spring semester.
If you are interested in submitting an article or photo essay to be included in the Inaugural issue of the Global Observer, please fill out this Submission Interest Form. We will collect submissions and pitches over the next six weeks and get back to you in January! If you have any questions, feel free to email firstname.lastname@example.org.
