Newcomb-Tulane Junior Year Abroad in Malta

An archipelago consisting of seven islands in the Mediterranean Sea, the Republic of Malta is a small and densely populated island nation, directly south of Sicily. Inhabited since 5200 BC by a wide range of civilizations, including Carthaginians, Romans, Phoenicians, Byzantines, the Normans and Arabs, Malta has steadfastly served as a war-time outpost for different armies, due mainly to its location. Finally, Malta was awarded Britain’s George Cross, as a testament to its service to the crown. The presence of a wide array of cultures has helped shape Maltese language and culture. Malta joined the European Union on May 1, 2004.  It intends to join the Eurozone in 2008.

Of the 400,000 inhabitants of Malta, some 9,000 attend the University of Malta in Msida.  The University traces its origins to the founding of the Collegium Melitense, which was set up in 1592 by the Jesuits and run by them until 1768. Since that date the University has been run by the state.  Students will directly enroll at the university, and take courses from a wide range of university offerings.
