Non-Tulane Programs
All
Tulane study abroad options have been reviewed and approved by the
Tulane Study Abroad Committee, and are administered by the Office of
Study Abroad or, in the case of faculty-led summer programs, a relevant
Tulane school or department.
This
page offers information on the petition/approval for students seeking
to participate on a program that is not on the Tulane approved list.
Non-Tulane Programs - Summer
Tulane
does not maintain an approved list of summer study abroad programs.
Students are free to research and identify summer programs that match
their individual interests.
Students
participating on a summer program not sponsored by a Tulane academic
department must complete the non-Tulane Summer Study Abroad Program
form available from the OSA study abroad advisor.
Students
should complete the Non-Tulane Summer Study Abroad Program Transfer
Form to transfer credit back to Tulane for a non-Tulane summer program
abroad.

Independent Scholar Option (ISO) - Semester or Yearlong
Through
the Independent Scholar Option (ISO), Tulane students may propose to
study abroad for a year or semester through a university or program
that has not been pre-approved by the Study Abroad Committee. This
option is available to students whose academic needs are not met by the
existing portfolio of approved Tulane Programs. To pursue the ISO
route, Tulane students must first petition the Study Abroad Committee
for approval.
Tulane requires a 3.5 GPA minimum for ISO Programs.
Upon approval, all Tulane study abroad policies and procedures outlined
on this web site apply to students who participate in ISO Programs.
Students remain enrolled at Tulane during their time abroad, and retain
Tulane financial aid and scholarships, as outlined in the policies
section of this web site.
Before submitting a petition, students considering ISO are required to
have an advising session with the Director of Study Abroad.
During this advising session, the director will provide the petition
forms to the student.
Petitions
include an essay, the Newcomb-Tulane Study Abroad Application, two
letters of recommendation, and 1 official Tulane transcript from the
Registrar’s Office. All pieces of the petition are due by the
posted deadline.
Students
will be notified within two weeks of the petition deadline according to
the timeline posted on the “applicants” page of the OSA web site.
Approved students will be expected to follow all steps outlined in the “accepted students” page of the OSA web site.
Students whose petitions are not approved may submit an application for an approved Newcomb-Tulane Study Abroad Program.
Upon return, students are expected to participate in a symposium series
organized by the OSA to present the work completed abroad. This
will be coordinated by the Office of Study Abroad.
The ISO is an opportunity to pursue a unique intellectual interest, not
duplicate existing Newcomb-Tulane program offerings. Given the
breadth and variety of Newcomb-Tulane options in the UK, Ireland,
Australia, as well as Anglophone Africa and Asia, proposals for work
conducted solely in English are discouraged unless a compelling
academic need exists. Proposals for study in countries where the
spoken language is offered at Tulane must include a demonstration of
appropriate preparation at Tulane (see policy on Language and Culture
Coursework).
All students studying on ISO programs are responsible for having an
official transcript of their work sent promptly to the OSA. All
credits earned will be posted on the Tulane transcript (see “Academic
Policies” for further details).

Leave of Absence - Semester or Yearlong
Tulane
students may take a leave of absence without transferring credit back
to Tulane in order to participate in a study abroad program not
approved by the Study Abroad Committee. No Tulane financial or
scholarships may be used while on a leave of absence.
Under
special circumstances, Tulane students may be approved by the Study
Abroad Committee to transfer credit back from a non-Tulane program.
This approval requires a petition to participate on non-Tulane programs
during the fall, spring or academic year. A 2.7 minimum CGPA is
required. Transfer credit is subject to individual academic department
approval, and is not guaranteed with an approval to participate.
The petition process is not to be seen as a way to side step Tulane policies and requirements. As such, petitions will not be reviewed from students who seek to take a leave of absence to participate in a program currently approved by Tulane; under no circumstances may the student transfer credit back to Tulane after participating in an appoved program while on a leave of absence.
Approval must be granted in the semester prior to the intended leave of absence following the stated deadlines--retroactive petitions will not be reviewed. Students should be mindful of this when registering a leave of absence.
Petition
forms are only available after an advising session with the Director of
Study Abroad. Approved students will register for a leave of
absence through the Newcomb-Tulane Advising Center for the duration of
the study abroad program.
The deadline to submit a petition is listed on the OSA web site.
